SUMMARY:Big Apple Birds
DESCRIPTION:Tourists abound in New York City\, including the thousands upon thousands of migrating birds that pass through the city’s parks to rest and refuel on their long journeys. Places like Central Park are world famous for bird-watching\, but are they any good for the birds themselves? Come hear Great Hollow Executive Director\, Chad Seewagen’s presentation on several years of research he did in New York City to evaluate the quality of urban parks as stopover habitat for migrating birds.

SUMMARY:Several Tips for Better Nature Photography
DESCRIPTION:Sherman resident and fine art photographer John Charles will offer a workshop on “Several Tips for Better Nature Photography.” This workshop is for anyone interested in outdoor photography\, whether film or digital media\, beginner or advanced photographer\, point-and-shoot camera or complicated DSLR. (The workshop will be non-denominational\, so religious debates concerning “Nikon vs. Canon” will not be allowed.) If John can’t answer your technical questions\, he’ll happily offer wild guesses and hope he’s not around when you actually act on his advice. More substantive information will be plagiarized from a variety of acknowledged experts in the field. Following a 45 minute powerpoint presentation in class\, participants will spend an hour or so outdoors on the Great Hollow hiking trails taking\, sharing and discussing their photographs with each other. If it is raining\, bring a raincoat\, waterproof shoes and a rain cover for your camera.

SUMMARY:Fun With Caterpillars
DESCRIPTION:Caterpillars are a critical component of forest food webs. They are the most abundant tree-feeding herbivores in Connecticut forests and are the primary food source for songbirds. Join Rob Clark\, a PhD Candidate at Wesleyan University\, for a day as a “Citizen Scientist”\, learning about insect ecology and collecting real\, scientific data. The program will begin with a short talk geared towards adults\, but children of all ages are welcome to participate in the insect collecting program that will follow outdoors. Participants will learn how to collect and identify different species of caterpillars and then share this information with scientists. The data will be contributed to a state-wide database that is being compiled to better understand how habitat change and climate change are altering food webs on a regional scale.
