SUMMARY:Kids' Nature Night: Eyes on the Skies
DESCRIPTION:In this next installment of our Kids’ Nature Night series\, we’ll take advantage of the clear winter skies to uncover the infinite mysteries of outer space! After we learn the basics of celestial navigation and astronomy\, we will use a telescope to find important navigational stars\, constellations\, and any visible planets. While we stargaze\, we will play games\, learn how to orient ourselves using just the night sky\, and make our very own “astrolabes.” Afterwards\, we will warm up with hot coco and discuss everything from astrophysics to the fascinating stories behind the constellations. \nThis is a drop-off program open to children ages 5 to 10. Parents\, it will be chilly and we will be outside for long periods\, so please be sure to send your child with warm clothing and footwear\, and gloves. We will provide a campfire dinner of hot dogs and veggie dogs with all the fixings\, and juice. Please feel free to send your child with an alternate dinner from home if you would prefer. Registration is $20/child for members and $25 per child for non-members. To register\, please email our Education Coordinator\, Maggie\, at mcozens@greathollow.org. Space is limited.

SUMMARY:Kids' Wild Winter series\, Part 2: Living Lichens
DESCRIPTION:**THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN** \nHave you ever wondered what those funny-looking things are that grow on the sides of trees? They’re lichens! Lichens are actually two different organisms – a fungus and either an alga or cyanobacterium – living and functioning together in a symbiotic relationship. Lichens help keep our air clean and healthy\, even in the winter! In this second part of our Wild Winter series for kids\, we’ll head out into the woods in search of these hardy organisms\, learn how to identify them\, and gather some data for a national citizen science project. We will also observe mosses\, look for winter edibles\, and collect other natural materials. Then\, we will head indoors and create our own take-home tiny terrariums filled with the treasures found on our adventure! \nThis is a drop-off program for children ages 8 to 12. Parents\, please dress you child(ren) appropriately to be outdoors. Registration is $10/child for members and $15/child for non-members. Please register by emailing our Education Coordinator\, Maggie\, at mcozens@greathollow.org. Space is limited.

We’ll venture out into the icy landscape and explore the effects of ice on the natural world. We’ll start off with a hike\, go on a geology scavenger hunt\, and collect different rock types that hold the secrets to glacial activity thousands of years ago! Then we will head indoors to warm up while we conduct some icy experiments\, play games\, and decorate our rocks. \nThis is a drop-off program open to children ages 5-10 years old. Please email our education coordinator\, Maggie\, at mcozens@greathollow.org with any questions or to register. $15 per child for non-members; $10 per child for members. SUMMARY:Winter Ecology Walk & Talk
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that when animals hibernate\, they don’t really “sleep” through the winter? Join our naturalist\, John Foley\, for a winter ecology hike through Great Hollow where we’ll learn how specially adapted plants and animals survive the winter. John will also share some tips on how to identify some of our trees and other plants when they have no leaves. If there’s snow on the ground\, we’ll look for animal tracks and interpret the animal’s behavior at the time they were left. Don’t forget to bring binoculars if you have some so you can look for wintering birds along the way. Please dress warmly and wear proper footwear for hiking. Please\, no dogs. Appropriate for ages 10 and up. Free for members; a suggested donation of $5/person for non-members is greatly appreciated. Please sign up in advance by emailing John at jfoley@greathollow.org.

SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Hike
DESCRIPTION:**This event has been cancelled** \n  \nJoin us and our friends at the Naromi Land Trust for a guided hike to witness the spring migration and breeding of wood frogs. Every spring\, wood frogs emerge from hibernation underground and migrate as far as 1/2 mile to their unique and ephemeral breeding habitats known as vernal pools. SUMMARY:How to Make Your Own Maple Syrup
DESCRIPTION:**This event has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 outbreak** \n  \nMaple syrup season has arrived! Come to Great Hollow and learn all about making maple syrup right in your backyard. No fancy evaporator systems here; just a hot open fire to gather around for good conversation and to watch the process of boiling sap into syrup\, or as the old-timers call it\, “liquid gold.” First we’ll learn how to identify and tap maple trees\, hang buckets\, and collect sap\, and then finally\, how to boil it down. Best of all\, we’ll have the opportunity to taste the product of our hard work – pure 100% backyard style maple syrup! And if there’s enough\, we will also have a limited number of small maple syrup bottles for you to fill and take home. \nPlease dress warmly and meet in the visitor’s parking area by the main entrance. A suggested donation of $10 per person is appreciated. Please sign up in advance by emailing John at jfoley@greathollow.org.

SUMMARY:Distance-Learning Program: Backyard BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce a series of free distance-learning programs which will allow you to bring Great Hollow right into your home\, and keep your kids learning and engaged with the natural world as we wait out this awful pandemic. Kick things off with us on Tuesday the 31st as we go on a virtual Backyard Bioblitz Adventure! Sometimes the most fascinating things lie right under our noses in our very own backyards. In this online class\, we will explore the habitats in our backyards\, see what cool animals and plants we can find\, collect data\, and discuss our discoveries together via ZOOM. We will then look for underlying patterns in the data that we collected\, talk about predator-prey relationships\, create maps\, and more! This program is most suitable for children ages 6 to 10. A brief assignment consisting of an outdoor journal activity and sensory exercise will be required beforehand. Participants will also need a computer or tablet with a camera\, microphone\, and internet connection. Please email our education coordinator Maggie  at mcozens@greathollow.org for more information and to register. Free for members and non-members

SUMMARY:Woodcock Walk
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 emergency.\n \n  \nEvery April for millennia\, an odd-looking migratory bird has returned to the Northeast from its far-away wintering grounds to engage in one of the more bizarre mating rituals in the Animal Kingdom. Perhaps you’re even familiar with the strange\, high-pitched\, nasally “pent” sound that can be heard coming from fields and young forests this time of year. These sounds are the mating calls of the American Woodcock\, also known as the Timberdoodle. During the last few moments of daylight\, male Woodcocks perform an unusual courtship display that the famous naturalist\, Aldo Leopold\, called “the sky dance.” The males repeatedly spiral high up into the air and then return to the ground in a wild zig-zag\, all in hopes of impressing and attracting one of the females watching them with a carefully judging eye. Join us on an evening walk to one of the local places where Woodcocks can often be seen engaging in this aerial display. \nWe will meet in Great Hollow’s visitor parking area at 7 pm and then take a short drive over to the Great Swamp Wildlife Management area off of Cornwall Hill Rd. in Patterson\, NY. You may also meet us there directly if you prefer (190 Cornwall Hill Rd.\, Patterson\, NY\, 12563). \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather\, wear sturdy footwear\, and bring a flashlight\, as we will be returning to our vehicles in the dark. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the parking area to where we hope to find Woodcocks displaying. Free for members; a suggested donation of $5/person for non-members is greatly appreciated. No dogs\, please. To sign up\, please email John at jfoley@greathollow.org.   *Please note that while we will do our best to find Woodcocks\, there is no way to guarantee it.

From rainforests and coral reefs of the tropics all the way to the temperate forests here in New England\, we will embark on an ecosystem odyssey and discover what we can do to ensure the health and protection of our planet. This program is most suitable for children ages 6 to 10\, but younger and older children (and even parents) are more than welcome to participate! The program will be conducted over ZOOM\, and require a computer/tablet with a camera and microphone. Please email our education coordinator Maggie for more details and to register. Free for members and non-members.
