SUMMARY:Apple Harvest & Cider Pressing
DESCRIPTION:Did you know there are over 7\,500 cultivar varieties of the domesticated apple? Apple trees have a long agricultural history in Connecticut and at Great Hollow. Join us for a presentation on all things apples from our naturalist and CT Master Woodland Manager Ben Lee. We’ll start in the lecture room with a discussion and overview of apple species\, a history of their cultivation\, and best practices for growing your own trees. We’ll then take a short walk outdoors to look at the apple trees at Great Hollow before pressing apples into cider. We’ll return to the lecture room for light refreshments and an opportunity for additional Q&As. \nThis program is a part of our Curious Adults Ecology Series. Please email Tara to register.  \nFall Schedule\nOctober 16: Fall Foliage Hike\nOctober 23: Fall & Winter Herpetology\nNovember 6: Apple Harvest & Cider Pressing\nNovember 13: Winter Tree ID & Forest Ecology \nMember Pricing: $30 for the entire series; $10 a la carte\nNon-member Pricing: $40 for the entire series; $15 a la carte

SUMMARY:Winter Tree ID and Forest Ecology
DESCRIPTION:You’re likely familiar with the shape of a maple leaf\, but could you identify a maple tree once all of the leaves have fallen? How do you identify a tree species when there are no leaves? Join us for a presentation and guided hike from our naturalist and CT Master Woodland Manager Ben Lee. Attendees will learn how to identify common trees of Connecticut using bark\, buds\, and other clues. Ben will also briefly discuss winter forest ecology including which tree species and characteristics are important for our overwintering native wildlife. After our hike we’ll return to the lecture room for light refreshments and an opportunity for additional Q&As. \n  \nThis program is a part of our Curious Adults Ecology Series.
