SUMMARY:Winter Tree & Shrub Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:Identifying trees by their leaves can be easy\, but how do you tell one species from another during the 6 months that trees in Connecticut have no leaves? Come down to Great Hollow on Saturday\, February 22th when our naturalist\, John Foley\, will teach some basic skills for identifying trees and shrubs during the winter by looking at subtle details in their bark and branch structure. There will also be a discussion of invasive species and the many emerging diseases that trees in our region now face. We will be hiking some of Great Hollow’s trails\, so please wear appropriate footwear and dress warmly. Meet in the visitor’s parking area by the main entrance. Free for members; a suggested donation of $5 per person for non-members is appreciated. Please sign up in advance by emailing John at jfoley@greathollow.org.

SUMMARY:Winter Wilderness Survival
DESCRIPTION:Do you have what it takes to survive the rest of the winter? Come found out during this next installment of our Winter Ecology series! Although spring is getting close\, February and March are challenging times in the natural world. Animals like deer\, foxes\, and beavers need to be extra resourceful during this time in order to make it to the spring. In this program\, we’ll start off by learning about the amazing adaptations these animals have to survive. Then we will head outdoors for a survival challenge of our own! We will venture into the woods and practice basic survival skills\, including how to use a map and compass\, how to forage for food\, and how to build a fire. Finally\, when we’ve mastered our survival skills\, we’ll warm up with some hot chocolate and indoor games. \nThis is a drop-off program open to children ages 5 – 10. We will be outdoors for long periods of time\, so please dress your child(ren) appropriately. Registration is $15 per child for non-members and $10 per child for members. Please email our education coordinator\, Maggie\, at mcozens@greathollow.org or call (203) 546-7789 to sign up. Space is limited.
