SUMMARY:Distance-Learning Program: Let's Talk H2O!
DESCRIPTION:In this distance-learning program\, we will follow the journey of water as it repeatedly cycles throughout our planet and sustains all of Earth’s inhabitants. We will conduct basic water experiments\, take a look at aquatic organisms\, and discuss the importance of clean water in our communities. We will also use real-time online databases from regional watersheds to understand just how water moves through our local ecosystems. This program is most suitable for children ages 6 to 10. Some basic household materials\, such as ice cubes\, will be required along with a computer or tablet with a camera\, microphone\, and internet connection. Please email our education coordinator Maggie at mcozens@greathollow.org for more information and to register. Free for members and non-members.

SUMMARY:Woodcock Walk
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 emergency.\n \n  \nEvery April for millennia\, an odd-looking migratory bird has returned to the Northeast from its far-away wintering grounds to engage in one of the more bizarre mating rituals in the Animal Kingdom. Perhaps you’re even familiar with the strange\, high-pitched\, nasally “pent” sound that can be heard coming from fields and young forests this time of year. These sounds are the mating calls of the American Woodcock\, also known as the Timberdoodle. During the last few moments of daylight\, male Woodcocks perform an unusual courtship display that the famous naturalist\, Aldo Leopold\, called “the sky dance.” The males repeatedly spiral high up into the air and then return to the ground in a wild zig-zag\, all in hopes of impressing and attracting one of the females watching them with a carefully judging eye. Join us on an evening walk to one of the local places where Woodcocks can often be seen engaging in this aerial display. \nWe will meet in Great Hollow’s visitor parking area at 7 pm and then take a short drive over to the Great Swamp Wildlife Management area off of Cornwall Hill Rd. in Patterson\, NY. You may also meet us there directly if you prefer (190 Cornwall Hill Rd.\, Patterson\, NY\, 12563). \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather\, wear sturdy footwear\, and bring a flashlight\, as we will be returning to our vehicles in the dark. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the parking area to where we hope to find Woodcocks displaying. Free for members; a suggested donation of $5/person for non-members is greatly appreciated. No dogs\, please. To sign up\, please email John at jfoley@greathollow.org.   *Please note that while we will do our best to find Woodcocks\, there is no way to guarantee it.

SUMMARY:Citizen Science Saturday: Tree Challenge
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 emergency \n  \nApril is officially Citizen Science Month! Adults and teens\, come to Great Hollow for an afternoon of hiking\, data collection\, and learning as we put on our scientist hats. In this installment of our new “citizen science” series\, we will be taking part in GLOBE’s (The Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment) worldwide April Tree Challenge. We will hike throughout Great Hollow to identify and measure the height of as many trees as we can. You’ll learn the methods used by professional foresters and ecologists to characterize and inventory forests. The data we collect will then be sent to scientists researching climate change and carbon sequestration potential. We will be using an app to collect and submit the data to GLOBE\, so please bring your smartphone if you have one. \nSuitable for ages 13 and up. Free for members; a suggested donation of $5 per person for non-members is appreciated. Please sign up by emailing Maggie at mcozens@greathollow.org.
