SUMMARY:Kids’ Drop-in Day: Fall Ecology
DESCRIPTION:New Fairfield schools may be closed but Great Hollow will be open! Kids\, come join us for a day of fall exploration! During this full-day program\, children will have the opportunity to go on hikes and be creative with crafts while learning about the changes occurring in nature this time of the year. Registration is $50 per child for family-level members and $55 per child for non-members. Space is very limited. Advance payment and registration are required. Lunch and snacks are not provided. This is a drop-off program open to children ages 7-12. Please contact our education director\, Tara\, to register your child.

SUMMARY:Fall Foliage Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy a guided fall foliage hike to the waterfall with our naturalist and CT Master Woodland Manager Ben Lee. Attendees will learn how to identify common trees of Connecticut\, as well as some invasive species\, through leaves and bark. We’ll meet in the lecture room of the Merritt House for a brief discussion on basic tree identification. Next we’ll hike through second-growth forest to the upper falls on the red trail before returning to the lecture room for light refreshments and an opportunity for additional Q&As. \nThis program is a part of our Curious Adults Ecology Series. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by herpetologist and Great Hollow research fellow\, Dr. Griffin Nicholson\, on the fascinating ways reptiles and amphibians survive the winter. We’ll start with a brief indoor presentation on “thermal ecology” and the strategies Connecticut species use to survive the winter. Dr. Nicholson will also discuss how anthropogenic changes can impact winter survival of reptiles and amphibians and how we can help these sensitive species survive a vulnerable time of year.
