SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Hike
DESCRIPTION:**This event has been cancelled** \n  \nJoin us and our friends at the Naromi Land Trust for a guided hike to witness the spring migration and breeding of wood frogs. Every spring\, wood frogs emerge from hibernation underground and migrate as far as 1/2 mile to their unique and ephemeral breeding habitats known as vernal pools. We’ll hike up to the vernal pools at the top of the Towner Hill Preserve in Sherman to see wood frogs in action and listen to their chorus of mating calls. The hike is moderately difficult and includes a fairly short\, but steep uphill walk. Kid friendly and recommended! \nWe will meet at the White Silo Winery parking lot (32 Route 37 East\, Sherman\, CT) and carpool just up the road to the Towner Hill Preserve’s trail head. \nPlease register in advance by emailing John at jfoley@greathollow.org. Space is very limited\, and please\, no dogs. Free for members and non-members.

SUMMARY:How to Make Your Own Maple Syrup
DESCRIPTION:**This event has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 outbreak** \n  \nMaple syrup season has arrived! Come to Great Hollow and learn all about making maple syrup right in your backyard. No fancy evaporator systems here; just a hot open fire to gather around for good conversation and to watch the process of boiling sap into syrup\, or as the old-timers call it\, “liquid gold.” First we’ll learn how to identify and tap maple trees\, hang buckets\, and collect sap\, and then finally\, how to boil it down. Best of all\, we’ll have the opportunity to taste the product of our hard work – pure 100% backyard style maple syrup! And if there’s enough\, we will also have a limited number of small maple syrup bottles for you to fill and take home. \nPlease dress warmly and meet in the visitor’s parking area by the main entrance. A suggested donation of $10 per person is appreciated. Please sign up in advance by emailing John at jfoley@greathollow.org.

SUMMARY:Distance-Learning Program: Backyard BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce a series of free distance-learning programs which will allow you to bring Great Hollow right into your home\, and keep your kids learning and engaged with the natural world as we wait out this awful pandemic. Kick things off with us on Tuesday the 31st as we go on a virtual Backyard Bioblitz Adventure! Sometimes the most fascinating things lie right under our noses in our very own backyards. In this online class\, we will explore the habitats in our backyards\, see what cool animals and plants we can find\, collect data\, and discuss our discoveries together via ZOOM. We will then look for underlying patterns in the data that we collected\, talk about predator-prey relationships\, create maps\, and more! This program is most suitable for children ages 6 to 10. A brief assignment consisting of an outdoor journal activity and sensory exercise will be required beforehand. Participants will also need a computer or tablet with a camera\, microphone\, and internet connection. Please email our education coordinator Maggie  at mcozens@greathollow.org for more information and to register. Free for members and non-members

SUMMARY:Woodcock Walk
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 emergency.\n \n  \nEvery April for millennia\, an odd-looking migratory bird has returned to the Northeast from its far-away wintering grounds to engage in one of the more bizarre mating rituals in the Animal Kingdom. Perhaps you’re even familiar with the strange\, high-pitched\, nasally “pent” sound that can be heard coming from fields and young forests this time of year. These sounds are the mating calls of the American Woodcock\, also known as the Timberdoodle. During the last few moments of daylight\, male Woodcocks perform an unusual courtship display that the famous naturalist\, Aldo Leopold\, called “the sky dance.” The males repeatedly spiral high up into the air and then return to the ground in a wild zig-zag\, all in hopes of impressing and attracting one of the females watching them with a carefully judging eye. Join us on an evening walk to one of the local places where Woodcocks can often be seen engaging in this aerial display. \nWe will meet in Great Hollow’s visitor parking area at 7 pm and then take a short drive over to the Great Swamp Wildlife Management area off of Cornwall Hill Rd. in Patterson\, NY. You may also meet us there directly if you prefer (190 Cornwall Hill Rd.\, Patterson\, NY\, 12563). \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather\, wear sturdy footwear\, and bring a flashlight\, as we will be returning to our vehicles in the dark. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the parking area to where we hope to find Woodcocks displaying. Free for members; a suggested donation of $5/person for non-members is greatly appreciated. No dogs\, please. To sign up\, please email John at jfoley@greathollow.org.   *Please note that while we will do our best to find Woodcocks\, there is no way to guarantee it.

SUMMARY:Epic Journeys of Migratory Birds
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that some migrating birds will fly more than 600 miles in a single day? That’s a lot of flapping! And did you know they can see the magnetic fields of the Earth and use them to determine which way is north vs. south? It’s happening all around us right now as millions of birds are returning to the area to breed after having spent the winter in Central and South America.  In this virtual class\, we will follow the fascinating and often perilous journeys of migratory birds as they make their way north for the summer. Using real-world data and interactive activities\, we will explore how migratory birds navigate\, where they stop to rest\, and what obstacles they face along the way. This program is most suitable for children ages 6 to 10\, but younger and older children (and parents) are more than welcome to participate.  Please email our education coordinator Maggie for more details and to register. SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Walk & Talk
DESCRIPTION:As stay-at-home orders for Connecticut and nearby areas of New York are lifted\, we will be gradually resuming events and programs at Great Hollow that are entirely outdoors and conducive to social distancing. The first such event will be an invasive plant walk on June 13th. Invasive plants are one of the biggest threats to biodiversity and a major challenge in conservation. There are now more than 100 non-native species of plants that have become established in Connecticut alone! Unfortunately\, many are still widely sold at garden centers and planted by homeowners.  Come to Great Hollow to learn how to identify many of these plants\, hear about how and when they were introduced to our region\, and find out what you can do to be a responsible property owner. Free for members; a suggested donation of $5/person for non-members is greatly appreciated. We are limiting attendance to only 10 people to allow for social distancing.  Please email John at jfoley@greathollow.org to register.
