SUMMARY:Distance Learning: Water\, Water\, Everywhere!
DESCRIPTION:In this virtual\, distance-learning program we will dive into the aquatic realm. We will explore interactive watersheds\, discover how scientists monitor water quality\, and see how different insects can alert us to problems from pollution. Note: it is not necessary for you to have participated in last week’s Let’s Talk H2O session to participate in this one. The program will be conducted over ZOOM\, and require a computer/tablet with a camera and microphone.  A short “water footprint” assignment will also be required beforehand. Most suitable for children ages 6 to 10. Please email our education coordinator Maggie for more details and to register. Free for members and non-members.

SUMMARY:Distance Learning: Ssssnakes\, Salamanders\, and Skinks
DESCRIPTION:In this distance-learning program\, we will virtually discover the many fascinating species of reptiles and amphibians that call Connecticut home. We’ll explore herptile adaptations\, have a visit from our resident corn snake and red-bellied turtle\, and learn all about the elusive five-lined skink (Connecticut’s only native lizard!). You’ll be sure to leave with a new love and appreciation of these often misunderstood animals that play important roles in our ecosystems and bring us no harm. This program is most suitable for children ages 6 to 10. The program will be conducted over ZOOM\, and require a computer/tablet with a camera and microphone. Please email our education coordinator Maggie for more details and to register. Free for members and non-members.

SUMMARY:Citizen Science Saturday: Tree Challenge
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 emergency \n  \nApril is officially Citizen Science Month! Adults and teens\, come to Great Hollow for an afternoon of hiking\, data collection\, and learning as we put on our scientist hats. In this installment of our new “citizen science” series\, we will be taking part in GLOBE’s (The Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment) worldwide April Tree Challenge. We will hike throughout Great Hollow to identify and measure the height of as many trees as we can. You’ll learn the methods used by professional foresters and ecologists to characterize and inventory forests. The data we collect will then be sent to scientists researching climate change and carbon sequestration potential. We will be using an app to collect and submit the data to GLOBE\, so please bring your smartphone if you have one. \nSuitable for ages 13 and up. Free for members; a suggested donation of $5 per person for non-members is appreciated. Please sign up by emailing Maggie at mcozens@greathollow.org.
