Facilities for Visiting Researchers

Great Hollow offers all of the facilities of a biological field station. At the center of our facilities is The Merritt House, a newly renovated 18th Century farmhouse. The Merritt House has office space, a classroom/lecture space, a conference room, a wet lab, and lodging accommodations. The office includes four work stations, a communal printer/scanner/copier, phone, and wireless internet access. The classroom/lecture space seats approximately 30 in rowed seating or 24 around tables. The room is equipped with a digital projector and wireless internet. The conference room overlooks our wetland and stream, and has a large stone fireplace and a table that seats approximately 15 people for meetings or presentations to small groups. The lab is modestly equipped with a -80° C freezer, fume hood, dissecting scopes, analytical balance, drying oven, autoclave, soxhlet apparatus, water bath, microcentrifuge, vortexer, variable pipettes, portable blood chemistry meters, and basic glassware. Prospective visiting researchers should contact the Executive Director if they have particular needs or wish to bring in their own equipment.

Lodging at the Merritt House includes 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, dining room, large fully-equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, cable TV, wireless internet, and an outdoor deck and patio. Additional lodging is available in the Gate House, which has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and an equipped kitchen.
